Boyarina Morozova (1887)

"Boyarina Morozova" depicts the noblewoman Theodosia Morozova on her way to exile for being a leader of the Old Believers. This is a Historical painting that shows resistance to the authorative rule of the Church and State. She holds her hand up in resistance, looking at the authorities to show that she will still stay true to her beliefs in the face of social injustice. In the time of Peredvizhnikis, this would give a peasant viewer who could relate to these injustices strength to push on in times of hardship and strength to face up against the ruling class in times when the revolution would finally come.
